‘Nona’ now a typhoon; Signal No. 2 up in 6 areasMANILA – “Nona” (international name: “Melor”) has intensified into a typhoon, slightly changing its course as it moves closer to the country’s landmass, state weather bureau PAGASA said Sunday.
In its 5 p.m. advisory, PAGASA said Nona was located 440 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar as of 4 p.m.
It is now packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, with gusts of up to 170 kph. Nona has also slightly changed it course, now moving west at 19 kph.
PAGASA has raised storm warning signal number 2 over Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon and Ticao Island, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar and Samar.
Public storm warning signal number 1, meanwhile, was raised over the following areas:
– Southern Quezon
– Marinduque
– Romblon
– Camarines Norte
– Camarines Sur
– Masbate including Burias Island
– Biliran
– Leyte
– Southern Leyte
– Northern Cebu including Camotes Island
– Dinagat province
– Siargao Island
Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the typhoon’s 300-kilometer diameter.
PAGASA also said it may raise storm warning signal number 1 over the rest of Southern Luzon, Aklan, Capiz and Metro Manila by Sunday night, and signal number 3 over Bicol region and Samar provinces as Nona moves closer to land.
It is expected to make landfall within the area of Samar and Sorsogon on Monday morning.
Nona is expected to exit the country’s landmass by Wednesday.
Areas at risk
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Central Office Disaster Information Coordinating Center (CODIX) on Sunday released a list of areas which may be hit by the tropical storm.

On its Facebook account, the DILG CODIX showed the forecast track of Nona and the areas at risk of experiencing the effects of the storm.
It raised an alert over the following areas, which are within the 350-kilometer diameter of the forecast track of the storm: Aklan, Albay, Antique, Batangas, Biliran, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Capiz, Catanduanes, Cavite, and Cebu.
Also covered by the alert were: Eastern Samar, Laguna, Leyte, Marinduque, Masbate, Northern Samar, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Quezon, Romblon, Samar and Sorsogon.
The DILG CODIX also gave a list of provinces within the 50-kilometer radius from the forecast track expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall.
These are: Albay, Eastern Samar, Masbate, Northern Samar, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Romblon, Samar and Sorsogon.
Due to severe winds, storm surges of about 3 to 4 meters high over coastal areas may also occur, it added.
Local government units have started preparing for possible forced evacuation in areas threatened with flash floods, storm surges and landslides.
